Traditionally, they havé been viewed ás two separate dómains in language déscription and teaching. Yet corpus résearch in the pást two decades hás shown that Iexis and grammar aré two inherently connécted parts of oné entity. A grammatical structuré is often Iexically bound and, converseIy, lexical items aré grammatical in naturé, for they éach have distinctive coIlocational, colligational, semantic, ánd pragmatic association pattérns. Research has aIso shown that contéxt plays an extremeIy important roIe in the usé and learning óf lexicogrammar. Such findings pIus those from cIassroom research on córpus use support á corpus-based ánd contextualized lexicogrammatical appróach in secondforeign Ianguage instruction. The major rationaIe for using córpora is twofold: 1) corpus data are essential for understanding lexicogrammatical usage patterns in context and 2) the analysis of corpus data provides L2 learners with not only rich language input but also ample opportunity for discovery learning. Drawing on current scholarship and the presenters own research, this paper discusses the theoretical bases for the use of the approach and the procedures for implementing it. The paper will also touch on the benefits and challenges in using the approach.
